When is the best time to come fishing in Montana? I get asked that question a lot. The answer? Whenever you decide to come!
I have pondered this question a lot over the years and I really do believe my answer to be true. If you were to come out right now you are going to have great fishing and no crowds. Plus, with the cooler nights and mornings you will get to sleep in as we rarely get on the river much before 10:30 am this time of year and fish until 7 pm or so. Will the weather be perfect? Depends on the day, but I can assure you that fun and fish will be had. Then there is summer. Good hatches everyday, dry fly fishing everyday, sunlight from 5 am to 10 pm and warm consistent weather. Are the rivers more crowded? Sometimes, but we try and pick the floats that takes the “crowds” out of the equation. And last, but not least, there is fall. One of my favorite times of year! The kids are back in school, people are finished taking their vacations, and once again you have the rivers all to yourself. The nights are cool and the days are mild, the colors are bursting from the trees and foliage, Elk are bugling, and the fish eating because they know winter is coming!
The best time to fish in Montana is anytime you are ready to go. Pick a day and stick with it. If you try to plan your trip based on what the weatherman says, you may never get to take that trip and let’s face it he is wrong most of the time. So pick that day, give us a call, and we will show you a great day on river.
